Mother's Day

Hello Friends,

This weekend, we as a nation have set aside a day to honor our mothers. Hopefully, we’ll look back with fond memories of all our mothers have done for us throughout our lifetime. It all begins at our beginning. As my father-in-law humorously, yet accurately, stated, “We wouldn’t be here without our mothers!” It’s especially easy for us guys to forget all that she went through in the delivery process in order for us to be here. But of course it didn’t end there. Our mothers so often put our needs and even some of our wants ahead of their own needs and desires.

I read a story this week about a mother. Anyone who saw her on the street would notice nothing special about her. Yet because she was a mom, she did something extraordinary when the circumstances called for it. If you’re interested, you can read the full story here. For this woman, the one thing that allowed this ordinary woman to do the heroic was her love for her child.

While most mothers are never put in such a life or death situation, they will often sacrifice in ways that no one else would even consider for their children. But what makes me sad is that so much of what our mothers do goes unappreciated for many years; often until it is too late to show them our gratitude.

When we do think about all our mothers mean to us, it’s easy to think, “Why do we need a Mothers’ Day? Shouldn’t we remember her every day?” Of course we should, but the reality is that so many things in life are left undone if we aren’t reminded.

Even gratitude for the greatest acts of love can be overlooked. I think that’s why Christ instituted the Lord’s Supper. How could we forget to honor all He did for us on Calvary? But we can forget so easily if we don’t have that weekly reminder as we gather together around the communion table to remember his broken body and his shed blood.

If you’re a mom, thankfully receive the honor you’re being given this Sunday. If you still have your mom, show her how much she means to you. And if, like me, your mother has passed on, take time to treasure your good memories. And don’t forget to thank the One who gave you your mom!

Until next time.

All glory be to God,

Tim
